President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev called for the adoption of an agreement on trade facilitation within the framework of the Economic Cooperation Organisation (ECO).

Last year, the trade index between ECO member countries totalled $85 billion, Shavkat Mirziyoyev said. This means only 8% of the total foreign trade of the organisation's member states.

"Unfortunately, years of efforts to conclude a preferential trade agreement are not yielding the expected results. Many restrictions and problems still remain on the way to the formation of unimpeded trade," the head of Uzbekistan said, speaking at the organisation's summit in Tashkent.

The head of state stressed that it is necessary to openly recognise these situations and approach the situation in a new way to change them in a positive direction.

"In this regard, I call for the adoption of the agreement developed by our experts on simplification of trade turnover within the framework of the Economic Cooperation Organisation," Mirziyoyev said.

The document focuses on simplifying trade in goods and services, removing technical and notarial barriers, digitalising customs, phytosanitary and veterinary procedures, and developing e-commerce. According to preliminary estimates, these measures could double the volume of mutual trade by 2035.
