Northrop Grumman has begun the first phase of production of the B-21 Raider strategic bomber, which is considered the first sixth-generation aircraft, Breaking Defense reported, citing US Undersecretary of Defence for Acquisition and Supply William LaPlante.
"Production of the B-21 ‘Raider’ stealth bomber is moving forward. This past fall, based on the results of ground and flight tests and the team’s mature plans for manufacturing, I gave the go-ahead to begin producing B-21s at a low rate," Laplante said.
He stressed that one of the key aspects of the B-21 programme was to establish large-scale production. According to the undersecretary, an aircraft's capabilities become useless if it is not produced in large quantities for military needs.
