Heavy clashes erupted between government forces and Kurdish formations in the Syrian city of Aleppo on Sunday. The incident led to casualties among civilians on both sides and threatens to derail the fragile agreement on the integration of Kurdish areas.
Clashes broke out in Aleppo between the forces of the Syrian army and the Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). The warring parties accused each other of the first attack on checkpoints in the Kurdish neighborhoods of the city.
According to official data from the parties, civilians were injured as a result of the shootout and shelling. The state agency SANA reported two dead and eight wounded among civilians as a result of fire from the SDF. In turn, Kurdish formations stated that one person was killed and 17 were injured from the actions of the government army, which used tanks and rocket attacks.
By the evening of the same day, the Syrian Ministry of Defense and the SDF command, according to media reports, ordered their units in Aleppo to cease fire. The incident occurred against the backdrop of a stalled peaceful integration process. According to the March agreement, Kurdish civilian and military structures were to become part of the unified authorities controlled by Damascus by the end of 2025. However, due to serious disagreements, the terms of the agreement were not met, which created the ground for a new escalation.
