Tamas Sulyok elected as Hungary's new president
Political
A parliamentary vote was held in Budapest, electing Tamas Sulyok as the new President of Hungary. The 67-year-old Sulyok succeeds Katalina Novak, who resigned after a conflict.
His candidacy was supported by 134 MPs, with only 5 against. Only five deputies from the nationalist Our Homeland party opposed his appointment.
Sulyok, a lawyer by training, is known for his expertise in constitutional law. Despite his lack of political experience, his selection is seen as a step towards unifying the country after previous divisions. He is expected to adhere to the rule of law and present himself as a neutral figure in Hungary's political spectrum.
The President of Hungary, although he has limited powers, is important to the citizens of the country as a symbol of unity. He signs laws, determines the date of elections and has other formal functions, but the main power is concentrated in the hands of the prime minister and the government within the framework of the parliamentary republic.
The current prime minister of Hungary is Viktor Orban, who has been leading the country since 2010.
