Tashiev and Shakiev Questioned in Coup Attempt Case

The political landscape of Kyrgyzstan is undergoing a tectonic shift. A high-profile case involving an attempted coup d'état has reached those who were until recently at the pinnacle of power. The hours-long questioning of former political heavyweights—Kamchybek Tashiev and Nurlanbek Shakiev—confirms that Bishkek has launched a massive legal offensive against the opposition-leaning elite.

Tashiev and Shakiev Questioned in Coup Attempt Case
The Main Investigative Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Kyrgyzstan conducted a series of interrogations of former high-ranking officials in a case regarding an attempted violent seizure of power. Among those summoned for questioning were former GKNB chief Kamchybek Tashiev, former Speaker of the Jogorku Kenesh Nurlanbek Turgunbek uulu (Shakiev), and former MP Kurmankul Zulushev. After several hours of discussion with investigators, the politicians left the MIA building; however, their legal status in the case remains under intense public scrutiny.

The investigation is directly linked to the controversial "Letter of 75." In February, a group of influential figures addressed President Sadyr Japarov demanding early presidential elections. This appeal triggered a rapid personnel purge: Kamchybek Tashiev was dismissed from his post as head of the special services, the GKNB underwent radical reorganization, and Shakiev and Zulushev were forced to resign their parliamentary seats.

Currently, investigators are classifying the actions of the individuals involved under serious charges related to organizing mass unrest and preparing a coup d'état. A number of other signatories of the scandalous letter are already in pretrial detention. While law enforcement authorities are withholding official comments, the scale of the investigative actions indicates that the government intends to see the case through, definitively neutralizing potential pockets of political instability in the country.
