Tashkent Modernist Architecture Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List

The serial nomination “The Architecture of Tashkent Modernism: Modernism and the Traditions of Central Asia” has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List during the 48th session of the World Heritage Committee in Busan, Republic of Korea. The inscription includes ten architectural landmarks representing the development of modernist architecture in Uzbekistan during the second half of the twentieth century.
The newly listed property comprises the Pearl (Zhemchug) Residential Building, the State Museum of History of Uzbekistan, the Friendship of Peoples Palace, the State Museum of Arts of Uzbekistan, the Tashkent State Circus, the Central Exhibition Hall of the Academy of Arts of Uzbekistan, the National Palace of Cinema Arts of Uzbekistan, Chorsu Bazaar, Kosmonavtlar Metro Station, and the Sun (Quyosh) Heliocomplex in the Tashkent Region.
According to the Uzbek authorities, the selected sites illustrate the integration of modernist architectural principles with the cultural traditions of Central Asia and reflect the transformation of Tashkent following the 1966 earthquake.
The inscription marks Uzbekistan's sixth cultural property on the UNESCO World Heritage List and the country's first successful national nomination in 25 years. Uzbekistan also became the first country in Central Asia and the CIS to have twentieth-century modernist architectural heritage included on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
On the sidelines of the session, Gayane Umerova, Chairperson of the Uzbekistan Art and Culture Development Foundation and Chairperson of the National Commission of the Republic of Uzbekistan for UNESCO, met with Lazare Eloundou Assomo, Director of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre. The parties discussed ongoing heritage preservation initiatives, including the restoration of the Poi-Kalyan Complex, the creation of an open-air archaeological museum in Bukhara, and preparations for the future nomination of the Zaamin Mountains.
