Tashkent and Samarkand Join FAO’s Global Green Cities Network

Tashkent and Samarkand have officially joined the Green Cities Network of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). Membership gives the two cities access to international cooperation, knowledge exchange and technical support for developing more sustainable urban environments.
The certificates confirming their registration were issued on August 20, 2026, by the Secretariat of FAO’s Green Cities Initiative at the organization’s headquarters in Rome. Tashkent and Samarkand have therefore become part of a global community of cities working to create greener, healthier, more sustainable and inclusive urban environments.

The Green Cities Network promotes integrated approaches to sustainable urban development and cooperation among participating cities. Its three main areas of focus include urban and peri-urban forestry, urban and peri-urban agriculture, and sustainable bioeconomy.
Membership will enable Tashkent and Samarkand to receive technical assistance, participate in capacity-building programmes and city-to-city cooperation platforms, exchange knowledge and practical experience, develop partnerships and mobilize resources for environmental initiatives.
FAO’s Green Cities Initiative was launched in 2020. Its objective is to contribute to significant improvements in public health and well-being, as well as environmental conditions, across 1,000 cities worldwide by 2030.
Cooperation within the Network is based on the FAO Green Cities Communiqué and the FAO Green City Principles and Criteria. In the coming days, the Initiative’s Secretariat is expected to provide Tashkent and Samarkand with recommendations for an initial self-assessment. The process will help identify priority areas for development and shape technical support according to the specific needs of each city.
