After Tesla shareholders approved his massive compensation package, Elon Musk took charge of the US Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), but his decisions — including shutting down USAID — drew sharp criticism from the public and experts.

Tesla, DOGE, and Hundreds of Thousands of Victims — Musk’s Year
The year 2025 became one of the most unusual in Elon Musk’s career. Tesla shareholders approved a massive compensation package, and his hundreds of millions invested in Donald Trump’s campaign earned him gratitude and a high-ranking position in the new US administration.

In January, Musk took over the US Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), leading a team of young IT specialists working on federal budget optimization. Aggressive spending cuts only marginally approached Musk’s promise to reduce government expenses by $2 trillion.

The most controversial decision was the shutdown of USAID, an organization that had for decades delivered food and medicine to the world’s poorest regions. Harvard research indicates these measures may have resulted in hundreds of thousands of deaths.

“The richest man in the world, killing the poorest children — that’s, to put it mildly, not a pretty picture,” said Bill Gates in an interview with the Financial Times, commenting on Musk’s actions.
