The Tbilisi court sentenced former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili to 9 years in prison for embezzling state funds, according to local Georgian TV channels.
The charges against Saakashvili were first brought in 2014. This case became widely known as the "jacket case." According to the prosecution, during his presidency, Saakashvili used state funds to purchase jackets and coats, pay for his son's education, and cover medical treatments.
Saakashvili, who served as president from 2004 to 2013, lived abroad for some time before secretly returning to Georgia in 2021. Before that, he also worked in Ukraine as the head of the reform committee.
In 2021, he was also put on trial for illegally crossing the border when returning to Georgia. Saakashvili insists that all charges against him are politically motivated, but the European Court of Human Rights has not recognized him as a political prisoner.
