The French Government Resigns
Political
Yesterday, the Prime Minister of France presented the resignation of his government to the President of the Republic. French President Emmanuel Macron has accepted the resignation of Michel Barnier's government following a vote of no confidence in parliament. This was reported by the press service of the Elysee Palace.
It was also mentioned that Michel Barnier and his government members will continue to address current matters until a new government is appointed.
On December 4, a vote of no confidence was passed against Michel Barnier’s government. One of the reasons for the vote was the disagreement among the country’s political forces over the approval process of the 2025 budget.
Barnier’s government was formed in September 2023. After the National Assembly elections, no party managed to secure a majority of votes, which led President Macron to spend nearly three months appointing a new Prime Minister.
According to the French Constitution, the President can only hold parliamentary elections one year after the last elections. The last elections were held in July 2023. This marks the first time in French history since 1962 when the government of Georges Pompidou resigned.
