US Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard told Congress that the Iranian regime has been significantly weakened by strikes on its leadership and military capabilities, but it has not been fully defeated. The briefing came a day after the resignation of Joe Kent, Director of the National Counterterrorism Center, who had publicly stated that Iran did not pose an imminent threat to the US.

Gabbard noted that the intelligence community anticipated potential issues in the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial maritime trade route. She declined to classify Iran as an immediate threat, saying that determination rests with President Donald Trump.

The hearing included leaders of the CIA, FBI, NSA, and Defense Intelligence Agency. Discussions focused on the consequences of the strikes, the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, and potential risks for the US and its allies.

Lawmakers from both parties have questioned the rationale for military action against Iran, citing concerns over nuclear weapons development and threats to the security of the US and Israel.
