Türkiye's Central Bank Governor Hafise Gaye Erkan has announced her request to the country's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to relieve her of her post due to pressure on her and her family.
"A major reputation assassination campaign has recently been organised against me," Erkan said in a social media statement announcing her resignation. Erkan sparked criticism and ridicule on social media after she expressed dissatisfaction with Istanbul's high rental prices, which surpass those in Manhattan in New York.
Turkish Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek said that the reason for Erkan's resignation was purely personal motives and that the President fully supports the economic team and their programme.
Later it became known that after Erkan's resignation, President Erdogan appointed her former deputy Fatih Karahan to head the regulator.
Hafizeh Gaye Erkan had headed the Central Bank of Türkiye since 8 June 2023.
