The opening ceremony of the programme "Samarkand - the cultural capital of the CIS" was held on April 4 at the Samarkand regional musical-drama theatre named after Hamid Alimjan. This was reported in the press service of the Ministry of Culture of Uzbekistan.

During the event, the city administration was presented with a certificate awarding Samarkand the honourable title of the Commonwealth Capital of Culture.

The event was attended by Uzbek Culture Minister Ozodbek Nazarbekov, special representative of the Russian President for international cultural cooperation Mikhail Shvydkoy and other officials. It is also reported that the event included a large concert of art masters of the CIS countries.

It should be recalled that last year St. Petersburg was the CIS Capital of Culture. According to the programme and status, Samarkand in 2024 will be the main platform for creative meetings and tours of cultural and artistic figures of the CIS countries, performances of scientists and athletes, vernissages and exhibitions.
