Uzbekistan continues to actively develop the African vector of its foreign policy. It was recently announced that official diplomatic relations have been established with the Republic of Rwanda, a nation widely considered one of the most dynamically developing countries in East Africa.
The historic agreement was formalized on April 19 with the signing of a Joint Communiqué. The document was signed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan, Bakhtiyor Saidov, and his Rwandan counterpart, Olivier Nduhungirehe. In addition to establishing formal ties, the two sides approved a mechanism for political consultations by signing a corresponding Memorandum of Understanding. This establishes a legal framework for regular dialogue between Tashkent and Kigali on issues of economy, investment, and security.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Bakhtiyor Saidov emphasized that this move is part of a long-term strategy to strengthen cooperation with the nations of the African continent. Rwanda has become the 167th country with which Uzbekistan has established official diplomatic relations. Experts note that entering the Rwandan market could open new opportunities for Uzbek exporters in a logistically vital region of Africa.
