While the public debt increased by $2.9 billion during 2022, the public debt-to-GDP gap decreased due to the rapid growth of $11.1 billion in GDP.

The public debt of Uzbekistan as of January 1, 2023 is $29.2 billion (of which the public external debt is $25.9 billion, the public domestic debt is $3.3 billion). This is stated in the report on the status and dynamics of external debt at the end of 2022, published by the Ministry of Finance and Economy.

It is noted that the ratio of public debt to GDP at the beginning of 2021 amounted to 39 percent (at the end of 2021 - 38 percent), and as of January 1, 2023, it decreased to 36.4 percent.

“While the public debt increased by $2.9 billion during 2022, the ratio of public debt to GDP decreased due to the rapid growth of the gross domestic product, i.e. by $11.1 billion,” the report says.

The maximum volume of new signed annual agreements on attracting external debt on behalf of the state and under state guarantees for the current year is set at oriy 4.5 billion. In 2022, 23 agreements on external debt were signed on behalf of Uzbekistan for a total of $4 billion 486 million.

At the end of last year, 33.4 percent or $8.6 billion of the total state external debt accounted for supporting the state budget, 11.6 percent or $3 billion for the electric power industry, 10.9 percent or $2.84 billion for the energy sector , 9.8 percent or $2.54 billion for agriculture and water management, 9.7 percent or $2.51 billion for transport and transport infrastructure, 8.9 percent or $2.3 billion accounted for contributions to housing and communal sector.

The Law on Public Debt stipulates that the maximum amount of public debt in relation to GDP cannot exceed 60 percent.
