An Israeli strike in southern Beirut has left three dead, including a woman, and 74 injured. The attack occurred in a densely populated area of the Lebanese capital.
Israeli officials announced that the strike killed Fuad Shukr, a top military commander of the radical Shiite group Hezbollah. Shukr was responsible for a rocket attack on a Druze village in the Golan Heights that resulted in the deaths of 12 children and teenagers.
Shukr was also wanted by the United States for his role in the 1983 bombing of U.S. Marine barracks in Beirut.
Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) spokesperson Daniel Hagari stated, "Hezbollah’s ongoing aggression and violent attacks are dragging the people of Lebanon and the entire Middle East into further escalation. While we prefer to resolve military actions without broader war, the IDF is fully prepared for any scenario."
The Lebanese government condemned the Israeli strike, noting that it occurred just meters away from one of Beirut's largest hospitals. Several buildings were damaged in the attack.
