Trump Hesitates over $14B Arms Package to Taiwan

Donald Trump’s stark warning puts Washington’s unconditional support for Taipei into serious question. The U.S. leader explicitly stated that the United States does not intend to get dragged into a global warfare for the island's sovereignty, urging Taiwan not to exploit American backing and to maintain the current status quo with Beijing.

U.S. President Donald Trump, in an interview with Fox News, cautioned Taiwan against attempting to declare formal independence under the assumption of Washington's backing. "We are not seeking wars," Trump emphasized, noting that Beijing is satisfied with the current state of affairs as long as it remains unaltered. In line with this approach, the Head of the White House declined to confirm whether he would sign off on a $14 billion military aid package for Taipei, which was preliminary approved by lawmakers last year but has since been stalled by the administration.

In response, Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that it had taken note of the President's remarks. The island’s diplomats stressed that U.S. arms sales are a legal security commitment explicitly mandated by the Taiwan Relations Act. Trump's stance reflects the new administration's overarching goal to mitigate geopolitical risks and avert a direct military confrontation with China.
