UEFA: Israeli clubs remain in European competitions
Sport
The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has decided not to suspend Israeli clubs and national teams from international tournaments. According to Israel Hayom, the decision was influenced by pressure from the United States, as well as support from diplomats and senior sports officials.
The issue was initially expected to be discussed at the UEFA Executive Committee meeting on September 23, but it was removed from the agenda. This means that Tel Aviv’s Maccabi will be able to play in the UEFA Conference League — their first match against Greek side PAOK is scheduled for September 24.
Earlier, eight UN experts appealed to UEFA and FIFA, demanding Israel’s suspension from international competitions, citing the “ongoing genocide in Palestine.” Despite these calls, the Israel Football Association has retained its right to compete in European tournaments.
