UK Expands Defence Cooperation with Ukraine as Burnham Arrives in Kyiv

UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham has arrived in Kyiv for his first overseas visit since taking office. His talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy are expected to focus on expanding military technology cooperation and strengthening Ukraine’s defence industry.
Burnham is expected to provide technical documentation that would enable Ukraine to develop its own long-range missile production capabilities. His government also plans to authorize MBDA to declassify information on British components used in the SCALP missile, the French counterpart to the UK’s Storm Shadow.
During the visit, the British prime minister will chair the first meeting of the “Coalition of the Willing,” an initiative established by the United Kingdom and France to coordinate long-term support for Ukraine. He will also participate in events marking Ukraine’s Independence Day.
Ahead of the visit, Burnham said Ukraine’s security is inseparable from Britain’s own security and reaffirmed London’s commitment to supporting Kyiv for “as long as it takes.” He added that the partnership between the two countries should endure beyond the war.
The planned technology transfer is viewed as a significant step in defence cooperation, aimed not at supplying finished missiles but at expanding Ukraine’s domestic capacity to manufacture precision long-range weapons.
