US and Ecuador Launch Joint Military Operation Against Drug Groups

The United States has begun a military operation in Ecuador in coordination with local security forces, according to the United States Southern Command.
In a statement posted on X, the command said that Ecuadorian and US armed forces had initiated operations against organizations designated as terrorist groups. Washington emphasized its commitment, along with Latin American partners, to counter narcoterrorism and transnational crime.
Ecuadorian authorities announced the start of a new phase in the fight against drug trafficking and illegal mining.
According to official statements and local media reports, since December the US has been deploying personnel to a former American base in Manabí province. Aircraft, drones, and radar systems have been sent to the region.
Last year, the United States used military assets in the area to intercept and destroy boats allegedly transporting narcotics. US officials say the operations are aimed at curbing illegal trafficking and strengthening regional security.
