US and Iran Exchange Fresh Strikes as Conflict Spreads Across the Region

The United States launched a new wave of strikes against Iranian military targets, prompting Tehran to announce retaliatory missile and drone attacks on US-linked targets across several countries in the region. The escalation marks one of the most serious flare-ups between the two sides in recent weeks.
US Central Command (CENTCOM) said it had completed a wave of strikes on September 1 against Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps targets. According to CENTCOM, the operation targeted air defence sites, radar systems, maritime assets, mine-laying capabilities and communications infrastructure. The command said the strikes followed what it described as attempted IRGC attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and on US personnel deployed in the region.
US President Donald Trump said the strikes were also linked to an alleged Iranian attempt to place mines in the Strait of Hormuz and a missile attack on a US base in Jordan. He warned that further retaliation could trigger a more powerful US response.
Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it had launched retaliatory attacks against US facilities in Jordan and Iraq. Iranian sources also reported attacks against US-linked targets in Bahrain and elsewhere in the Gulf. Several claims regarding damage and casualties, however, have not been independently verified.
Jordan's Armed Forces said air defences intercepted 10 of 13 ballistic missiles that entered the country's airspace, while three landed in remote areas. According to preliminary information cited by US officials, no American casualties had been reported in Jordan.
Iranian media also reported explosions in several areas of southern Iran, including Konarak, Bandar Abbas and Qeshm Island. Iranian sources reported civilian casualties following one strike near Sirik, although accounts differ on the exact number of people killed.
The latest escalation follows US strikes on Larak Island in late August and subsequent Iranian retaliation. The renewed exchange has widened the geographical scope of the confrontation and increased tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important routes for global energy trade.
