A student from Uzbekistan, Muhammadaziz Umrzakov, a first-year neurosurgery student, was killed in a shooting at Brown University in the United States. The tragedy occurred on Saturday, December 13, during exams held in a lecture hall of the engineering and physics departments.

According to preliminary reports, the gunman fired more than 40 shots. As a result, two people were killed and nine others were injured and hospitalized.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan expressed deep condolences to the victim’s family. Uzbek diplomatic missions in the United States remain in close contact with the relatives and are cooperating with U.S. authorities.

Earlier reports mentioned the detention of 24-year-old Benjamin Erickson from Wisconsin. However, authorities later announced his release. Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha confirmed that the suspect was released after evidence “pointed in a different direction.”

U.S. President Donald Trump was briefed on the incident and expressed his condolences to the victims’ families.

A fundraising campaign has been launched to support the family of the Uzbek student. So far, $251,000 out of $260,000 has been raised through more than 5,500 donations. The largest single donation — $18,000 — was made by investor William Ackman.

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
