Uzbek Citizen Sentenced to 10 Years for Links to Terrorist Organizations

An Uzbek citizen born in 1995 in Kashkadarya Region has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for crimes linked to terrorist organizations. According to the case materials, his exposure to extremist ideology began through social media while he was studying in South Korea.
In 2017, the man enrolled at a university in South Korea. During his studies, he accessed audio and video materials promoting “jihad,” “hijrah” and “martyrdom” through social media. After viewing footage of armed clashes in Syria, he established contacts via Instagram and Telegram with individuals linked to the terrorist organizations Katibat al-Tawhid wal-Jihad and Katibat Ghuraba, which operate in Syria, and began distributing their materials.
After graduating, he remained in South Korea and, according to the case materials, transferred money to Saad Mukhtar, a media blogger associated with Katibat Ghuraba. He returned to Uzbekistan in December 2023.
In July 2024, he attempted to travel to Türkiye with the intention of joining militants in Syria, but the plan was not carried out.
The man was subsequently detained during operational measures. The court found him guilty under Articles 244¹, 244², 155² and 155³ of the Criminal Code of Uzbekistan and sentenced him to 10 years in prison.
