The festival is organized jointly with the Uzbekistan Art and Culture Development Foundation. Its theme is the development of cultural exchange between Japan and Uzbekistan through music and reflection on the historical ties between the two countries.

Performers will include Japanese singer and composer Tokiko Kato, pianist Yoko Kanno, known for her anime soundtracks, the Tumor State Dance Ensemble, the National Symphony Orchestra of Uzbekistan conducted by Alibek Kabdurakhmanov, and Uzbek opera singer and People’s Artist Zhenisbek Piyazov.

The programme will feature orchestral works and nine songs by Tokiko Kato, including “Million Scarlet Roses”, “Sometimes We Remember the Past”, the ending theme of Studio Ghibli’s animated film “Porco Rosso”, and Edith Piaf’s “Hymne à l’amour”. “Higashikawa Song”, dedicated to the city in Hokkaido, will also be performed.

The evening will conclude with Zhenisbek Piyazov performing “Voices Connecting the Peoples of the Silk Road”. He will also perform “Sardana” in a duet with Tokiko Kato. Piyazov is learning Japanese for his performance at the festival.

For Tokiko Kato, this will be her second performance in Uzbekistan. In 2003, she visited the country as a Goodwill Ambassador for the UN Environment Programme and gave a concert with an orchestra.

“For us Japanese, our connection with the Silk Road has a deep and invaluable significance. Songs, musical instruments, dances and clothing reached distant Japan precisely along this route,” the singer said.

“We sincerely hope that this music festival will become a strong bridge for new cultural cooperation between Japan and Uzbekistan,” said Yoshitsugu Minagawa, Director of the Silk Road Foundation.

A 30-member Japanese delegation representing business, regional authorities and public organizations will attend the festival. Guests include Higashikawa Mayor Shin Kikuchi and former deputy ministers of finance, agriculture, forestry and fisheries of Japan.

The Silk Road Foundation has conducted exchange activities between Japan and Uzbekistan since 2005 and has operated as a foundation since 2010. It develops cooperation in culture, art, education, science and technology, tourism and economic dialogue. The festival will take place from 18:00 to 20:00 on October 10 at the Alisher Navoi Bolshoi Theatre.
