Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan to Exchange Prisoners

From now on, prisoners will serve their sentences in their home countries. This provision was established in the law reviewed on March 18 during the fifth plenary session of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis.

Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan to Exchange Prisoners
During the session, the law “On the Ratification of the Agreement between the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Kyrgyz Republic on the Transfer of Persons Deprived of Liberty for the Continuation of Sentence Execution” was discussed.

The primary objective of the agreement is to enable convicted individuals to serve their sentences in their country of citizenship, i.e., their homeland, close to their families. The document clearly outlines the grounds, conditions, and procedures for transferring convicts to their respective countries for sentence execution.

Additionally, the agreement covers important issues such as the costs associated with prisoner transfers, dispute resolution, languages of bilateral communication, amendments to the agreement, and its entry into force. The General Prosecutor’s Offices of Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan have been designated as the central authorities of the parties.

As noted, the ratification of this agreement will facilitate the social rehabilitation of prisoners by allowing them to continue serving their sentences in their home country.

Undoubtedly, serving a sentence in one’s own country will allow prisoners to maintain regular contact with close relatives, positively influencing their family relationships and accelerating their reintegration into society.

Following the discussions, the law was approved by the senators.
