Uzbekistan and Tajikistan: Strengthening trade and economic cooperation

A regular meeting of the intergovernmental commission on trade and economic cooperation between Uzbekistan and Tajikistan was held in Dushanbe on 12 March. This is reported on the government portal of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
It is reported that mutual trade turnover has been growing in recent years. Last year its volume reached $757 million. It was noted that in the future it is necessary to take all joint measures to bring mutual trade to $1 billion, which can be achieved through consistent implementation of a number of joint projects in industrial cooperation, energy, agriculture and water management, transport and logistics.
Particular attention at the meeting was paid to accelerating the implementation of the project to create an Uzbek-Tajik international border trade zone and establishing wholesale distribution centres in the border areas for exporting agricultural products to third countries.
It was also noted the need to work out the existing opportunities for deepening industrial cooperation in agro-industrial, textile, pharmaceutical, chemical, metallurgical, electrical, machine-building, construction and other sectors.
The sides expressed interest in further developing co-operation in the field of agriculture, establishing joint agricultural clusters in the border areas of the two countries and conducting joint research.
It was noted that the transport and communication sphere is an important factor in the implementation of joint trade, economic and investment projects, while cultural and humanitarian cooperation strengthens brotherly and good-neighbourly relations between our friendly peoples.
The event concluded with the signing of the minutes of the 11th meeting of the intergovernmental commission on trade and economic cooperation between the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Republic of Tajikistan.
