World
President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and key European leaders gathered at the White House to discuss prospects for ending the war between Russia and Ukraine.
Before the talks, Trump said the chances for a settlement were “high,” noting his direct conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin. He added that he planned to speak with Putin again immediately after the meeting with European leaders.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the meeting a “historic step” for Ukraine. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stressed that further talks were impossible without a ceasefire, while French President Emmanuel Macron echoed this view, calling an immediate truce a “necessity.”
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen underlined the importance of security guarantees for Ukraine. Rutte described Washington’s readiness to support such guarantees as a “turning point,” while von der Leyen compared them to NATO’s Article 5.
Finnish President Alexander Stubb emphasized the urgency of finding solutions, while Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said peace required unity and credible guarantees for Kyiv.
The meeting lasted about 1 hour and 40 minutes. According to US media, Trump also spoke with Putin during the talks. While no final agreement was reached, leaders agreed to continue dialogue, with a ceasefire seen as the crucial first step toward peace.
