Another global report published by the World Health Organisation analysed the leading cause of deaths among children and young people.

It is noted that two people die every minute as a result of road traffic accidents worldwide. This condition is to this day the leading cause of death among children and young people between the ages of 5 and 29.

According to the analysis, only 10 countries managed to reduce road traffic fatalities by more than 50 per cent between 2010 and 2021.

Among them, Belarus, Denmark, Japan, Lithuania, Norway, Russia, the United Arab Emirates are the leaders. Another 35 countries have made notable progress, reducing deaths by 30-50 per cent.

According to the report, the South-East Asia region had the highest number of road traffic deaths, 28 per cent, and the European region the lowest, 5 per cent. Nine out of 10 deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries. 53 per cent of all road traffic fatalities are those classified as 'vulnerable road users'. These include:

23 per cent were pedestrians;

21 per cent - drivers of two- and three-wheeled motorbikes;

6 per cent are cyclists;

3 per cent were drivers of micro-mobility devices such as electronic scooters.

It is noted that passenger car occupant fatalities declined to 30 per cent of the global total.
