Xi Jinping at White House Calls for US-China Dialogue and “Healthy Competition”
World
Chinese President Xi Jinping called on the United States and China to strengthen dialogue, expand cooperation and keep competition within clear limits during his visit to Washington. He held talks with US President Donald Trump at the White House on September 24.
Xi described China and the United States as major powers with a shared responsibility to contribute to human progress. He said open and sustained dialogue could strengthen mutual understanding and trust, while cooperation between the two countries would be important for addressing many global issues.
The Chinese leader also focused on artificial intelligence. He said China and the US, as leading countries in AI, have the ability and responsibility to develop and manage the technology so that it remains under human control and serves people’s interests.
On competition, Xi said it should be “healthy” and kept within clear boundaries. He compared it to a sporting race rather than a confrontation in which one side wins and the other loses. He also called for regular dialogue between the two militaries and stronger mechanisms for crisis communication and prevention.
Xi announced plans to invite 100,000 young Americans to China for study and exchanges over the next five years. He also said two giant pandas would soon arrive at Zoo Atlanta.
