A Peruvian court has sentenced former President Alejandro Toledo to 20 years and 5 months in prison for accepting a $35 million bribe in a corruption scandal involving the Brazilian construction company Odebrecht.
Toledo, who served as president from 2001 to 2006, was found guilty of helping Odebrecht secure a government contract to build sections of a highway linking Brazil and Peru. Odebrecht has admitted to paying bribes to win major contracts in Peru.
Toledo was arrested in California in April 2023, where he had been living for several years, and was extradited to Peru following a request from the Peruvian authorities. The arrest warrant for Toledo was issued in 2017.
Despite claims of heart issues and a cancer diagnosis, Toledo's health complaints did not prevent the court from handing down a severe sentence.
