The people of Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, China, Nigeria and Indonesia put their lives and health at the greatest risk, according to Epic experts.
The countries of Asia and Africa continue to lead the list of countries with high levels of air pollution.
This is reported in the Air Quality of Life Index compiled by researchers from the Energy Policy Institute (Epic) at the University of Chicago.
Experts assessed the concentration of tiny PM 2.5 particles in the atmosphere and found that the lives and health of people living in Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, China, Nigeria and Indonesia are most at risk.
Researchers believe that PM 2.5 levels in South Asia have increased by almost 10 percent since 2013, reducing life expectancy in the region by about five years.
Experts add that air pollution has become as serious a threat to people as HIV/AIDS or malaria due to rising energy consumption in Central and West Africa.
