On August 15, 2025, Russian President Vladimir Putin will become the first Russian leader to visit the U.S. state of Alaska. The trip is part of his meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, during which the two leaders will discuss the situation in Ukraine and bilateral relations.

Before Putin, U.S. visits were made by Nikita Khrushchev, Leonid Brezhnev, Mikhail Gorbachev, Boris Yeltsin, and Dmitry Medvedev, but none had ever set foot in Alaska.

Alaska, discovered in 1732 by Mikhail Gvozdev and Ivan Fyodorov, was initially Russian territory, generating revenue from the fur trade. In 1867, on the initiative of Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolayevich and with the approval of Tsar Alexander II, the region was sold to the U.S. for $7.2 million (over $150 million in today’s value). At the time, the purchase was mocked as “Seward’s Folly,” but later gold, oil, and gas discoveries turned it into one of the most profitable land deals in U.S. history.
