In Wooler, Northumberland (UK), 176 World War II bombs have been found beneath a children's playground. This unexpected discovery has caused serious concern among local residents, as children have been playing in the area for years.
The incident occurred on January 14. While digging the foundations for a new playground, workers uncovered a suspicious metal object. Initially, it was believed to be an old mortar shell or metal debris. However, after police and military experts conducted an inspection, it was confirmed to be practice bombs.
The next day, even more alarming discoveries were made — 65 bombs, each weighing 4.5–5 kg, were unearthed. On the second day of excavation, another 90 bombs were found.
Experts believe that during World War II, Wooler was used as a training center for the Home Guard. After the war, excess ammunition and explosives were simply buried underground.
Even after more than 80 years, these bombs are still charged, meaning they could explode at any time. Investigation and disposal operations are still ongoing.
