Crete shuddered from the underground impact

The residents of Greece felt a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1. Early in the morning on May 22, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 occurred off the coast of the Greek island of Crete. The earthquakes, whose epicenter was 56 kilometers northeast of Heraklion, were felt not only on the island but also in the mainland of Greece.

Emergency services are fully operational. In a number of districts, minor landslides and collapses of building facades were recorded. The authorities report that there is no serious damage, but they remain vigilant.

The head of the seismological service, Efthmios Lekkas, emphasized that there is no tsunami threat due to the depth of the epicenter. Agios Mayor Nicolaos confirmed that no destruction has been recorded, but the situation remains under control.
