Following threats directed at China during U.S. President Donald Trump’s inaugural speech, Chinese and Russian leaders Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin officially confirmed their close cooperation.

During a video conference held on Tuesday, January 21, Putin referred to his Chinese counterpart as a “reliable partner.” He also expressed intentions to expand collaboration based on friendship, mutual trust, and support despite external pressure. This was reported by China’s state television channel CCTV.

For his part, the Chinese leader called Putin his “best friend” and stated that relations with Moscow should reach “new heights” this year. “Both sides must continue to deepen strategic coordination, firmly support each other, and protect the legitimate interests of both countries,” Xi Jinping said.

A day earlier, Trump, in his inaugural speech, had threatened China with high tariffs and warned Russia of “major troubles” if a resolution to end the war in Ukraine was not found.

Since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Russia and China have been strengthening their military and economic ties. However, Beijing has never condemned Russia’s war against Ukraine, maintaining an officially neutral stance on the matter.
