Anti-corruption measures discussed
Uzbekistan
President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev on July 29 reviewed a presentation on combating everyday corruption, emphasizing the need to move from consequences to eliminating the root causes. Special attention was paid to digitalization, risk analysis, and improving control effectiveness on the ground.
At the March 5 meeting of the National Anti-Corruption Council, the President set the goal of eradicating this phenomenon. In April, a special department was established within the Prosecutor General’s Office to analyze regional corruption risks. Over 200 specialists and more than 100,000 law enforcement officers are engaged in prevention efforts.
However, much of the work still addresses the consequences of corruption, rather than its causes. The President emphasized the need to shift focus to preventive action, especially in everyday services such as local administrations, tax authorities, land registries, and banks.
The presentation outlined concrete steps to enhance the effectiveness of compliance units, digitize prosecutorial functions, analyze land allocation data, and improve transparency in public procurement.
Mirziyoyev stressed that government agencies must be evaluated not only by how many corruption cases they detect, but also by how many they prevent. Recommendations were also made to parliamentary committees regarding root-cause analysis at the community level and promoting zero tolerance for corruption among youth.
