Australia to Recognize Palestine in September
World
Australia will officially recognize Palestine as an independent state in September, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced.
According to Albanese, the decision follows assurances from the Palestinian leadership that Hamas will have no role in the future government, that demilitarization will take place, general elections will be held, and Israel’s right to exist will be recognized.
He emphasized that the “Two Peoples — Two States” principle is the greatest hope for ending the cycle of violence in the Middle East, as well as resolving the conflict, suffering, and famine in Gaza.
France, the United Kingdom, and Canada have previously taken similar steps toward recognizing Palestine.
