Ilham Aliyev said that Baku and Central Asia are the only historical, cultural and geopolitical space of strategic importance.
Azerbaijan will donate $3.5 million to the Trust Fund of the UN Special Programme for the Economies of Central Asia (SPECA), President Ilham Aliyev said in his speech at the SPECA summit in Baku.
"We consider the establishment of the SPECA Trust Fund under the auspices of the UN worthy of approval. I would like to note with pleasure that Azerbaijan will allocate $3.5 million to the Trust Fund," Aliyev said.
He emphasised that Azerbaijan and Central Asian countries are linked by centuries-old historical and cultural ties. "Azerbaijan and Central Asia are a single historical, cultural and geopolitical space of growing strategic importance," the head of state noted.
The SPECA programme was established in 1998 to develop economic cooperation and support integration of the region's countries into the world economy. The participating countries of the programme are Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Afghanistan.
