Azerbaijan to hold early presidential election

The next presidential election in Azerbaijan was supposed to be held in October 2025, but Aliyev decided to hold it in February 2024. He has led the country since 2003 and was re-elected for the fourth time in April 2018.
According to the order of incumbent President Ilham Aliyev, Azerbaijan will hold early presidential elections on 7 February 2024.
"The Central Election Commission of the Republic of Azerbaijan to ensure the appointment of extraordinary elections of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan for 7 February 2024 and holding them in the order established by the Electoral Code of the Republic of Azerbaijan," the order reads.
Regular presidential elections in Azerbaijan were to be held in October 2025. The reasons for changing the date of elections are not reported. According to the legislation of Azerbaijan, the President of the Republic is elected for a term of seven years. The last presidential election in Azerbaijan was held in April 2018.
