The presidential election in the Republic of Belarus will take place on January 26, 2025, according to a decision announced by the House of Representatives. President Alexander Lukashenko, who has ruled for 30 years, has not yet officially declared his candidacy for a seventh term, but many commentators believe he intends to stay in power.

The last election, held in August 2020, was marked by widespread protests and a harsh crackdown. Many opposition leaders have either fled the country or been imprisoned, while the international community, including the EU and the US, did not recognize the election results.

Lukashenko was officially reported to have won 80% of the vote in 2020, though the opposition claimed the election was rigged. Today, political repression continues, with over 1,300 political prisoners, including Nobel Prize laureate Ales Bialiatski, behind bars.

The close alliance between Belarus and Russia has led to the placement of Russian tactical nuclear weapons on Belarusian soil, and Belarusian territory has been used in military strikes against Ukraine.
