Biden pardoned his son before his term ended

Hunter Biden was facing criminal charges for illegal possession of a firearm and tax evasion. In a statement issued on Sunday, December 1, the president revealed that his son Hunter was unfairly charged due to political opponents and election-related pressures. As a result, President Biden granted a full pardon to his son, Robert Hunter Biden, in his capacity as both a father and the president.

Biden pardoned his son before his term ended
"Today, I granted a pardon to my son Hunter. When I took office, I promised not to interfere with the Justice Department’s decision-making, and even though I saw my son being unfairly prosecuted, I kept my word. People are rarely prosecuted for a felony related to firearms just for how they filled out a gun form, unless there are aggravating factors such as multiple purchases or purchasing a weapon as a straw buyer.

Even if someone has been late in paying taxes due to serious addiction, but later pays them off with interest and penalties, those cases are typically resolved without criminal charges. It is clear that Hunter was treated differently.

The charges in his case only arose after a few political opponents in Congress instigated them to attack me and oppose my election. Then, a plea deal that had been agreed upon by the Justice Department was undone in court.

Some of my political opponents in Congress took credit for putting political pressure on the process. Had the plea deal held, it would have been a fair and reasonable resolution of Hunter’s case. No fair-minded person looking at the facts of Hunter’s case can come to any other conclusion than that Hunter was singled out because he is my son – and that is wrong.

There was an effort to break Hunter. He has been sober for five and a half years, living peacefully even in the face of relentless attacks and selective prosecution.

By attempting to break Hunter, they tried to break me – and there’s no reason to believe it will stop here. Enough is enough.

Throughout my career, I’ve followed a simple principle: tell the American people the truth. They’ll be fair-minded. Here’s the truth: I believe in the justice system, but as I have wrestled with this, I also believe raw politics has infected this process and led to a miscarriage of justice.

– When I made this decision this weekend, there was no sense in delaying it further. I hope Americans will understand why a father and a president would come to this decision," the president signed the pardon.
