Biden urged Congress to "immediately" approve F-16 sale to Türkiye
The administration of US President Joe Biden sent a letter to the US Congress with a call to "immediately" approve the sale of F-16 fighter jets to Türkiye. This is reported by Reuters.

Biden reportedly intends to begin the process of selling the fighter jets as soon as Türkiye completes ratification of Sweden's application for NATO membership.

According to Reuters, in the letter, Joe Biden's administration calls for approval of the sale of F-16 fighter jets and modernisation kits worth $20bn.

The Turkish parliament approved the ratification of Sweden's NATO membership by a majority vote on 23 January. The document was then sent to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan for his signature. One of the conditions for lifting the veto on Sweden's NATO membership was the supply of US fighter jets to Ankara: back in October 2021, Türkiye asked the US to buy 40 F-16 fighter jets and 79 modernisation kits for its existing military aircraft.
