The ceasefire agreement in Gaza has come into effect, says Israel. The long-awaited truce has officially been implemented. “According to the hostage release plan, the first phase of the ceasefire in Gaza will take effect at 11:15 local time (09:15 GMT),” said a statement from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office.

The first three hostages released by Hamas include 31-year-old Doron Steinbrecher, 28-year-old Emily Damari, a British-Israeli national kidnapped from a kibbutz, and 24-year-old Romi Gonen, taken from the Supernova festival in October 2023. They are expected to be freed later today.

The ceasefire agreement will be carried out in three stages. In the first stage, 33 hostages are to be freed over six weeks in exchange for hundreds of Palestinians detained by Israel. The remaining hostages will be released in the second phase. In total, the deal covers 98 hostages, some of whom are believed to have died, including four individuals captured in 2014 and 2015.
