Colombian President Gustavo Petro said his helicopter changed course due to a potential shooting threat, which he believes helped prevent an assassination attempt.
Colombian President Gustavo Petro has reported a foiled assassination attempt. According to him, the helicopter he was traveling in did not land at the planned location because of fears it could come under fire.
Speaking at a government meeting broadcast on the presidential administration’s YouTube channel, Petro said he decided to change the flight route for security reasons. He noted that his children were also on board.
“I did not land where I was supposed to land because there were fears that the helicopter could come under fire,” the president said, adding that he had thus “avoided being killed.”
According to Petro, the helicopter spent about four hours over open sea before eventually landing at another location. No further details about the incident were provided.
