Among the deceased are 13 police officers who were killed in an attack on a police station in Sirajganj, 100 km north of the capital, Dhaka.

Student protests calling for the abolition of government job quotas began in July. Since then, over 280 people have died.

In Dhaka, police used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the demonstrators, and the prime minister ordered a shutdown of mobile internet across the country.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk urged the Bangladesh government to halt the violence. He also expressed concern about a mass rally planned in Dhaka on Monday, warning of the potential for further escalation.
