The agreement will only enter into force after it has been approved by the legislatures of both countries. Denmark will have to amend its legislation for this to happen. Work on this will begin next year.

Denmark signs major defence agreement with the US
The agreement will allow the US to station soldiers and weapons at bases in northern Denmark. US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen believe this will strengthen European security.

Following Sweden and Finland, Denmark, a NATO member, has signed a military co-operation agreement with the US. The relevant documents were signed in Washington on 21 December by Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen and US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken.

The agreement will allow the US to station troops and military equipment in northern Denmark. The Americans will also have access to three Danish air force bases - Karup, Aalburg and Skridstrup. Rasmussen expressed confidence that this would strengthen not only Danish, but also European and transatlantic security.

It is worth noting that the agreement between Washington and Copenhagen does not apply to the Faroe Islands and Greenland, which are largely self-governing territories.
