Nearly 30 years after Tupac Shakur was killed in Las Vegas, the trial of 63-year-old Duane “Keffe D” Davis, the only person charged in the case, has begun. Prosecutors allege that Davis orchestrated the attack and supplied the weapon, but it remains unclear who fired the fatal shots.
Shakur was fatally wounded in a drive-by shooting on September 7, 1996. He was riding in a BMW with Marion “Suge” Knight. The rapper died from his injuries six days later.
Investigators have linked the killing to a feud between the South Side Compton Crips and the Mob Piru Bloods. Shortly before the shooting, Shakur and members of his entourage assaulted Orlando Anderson, Davis’ nephew. Prosecutors say the incident provided a motive for the subsequent retaliation.
The case remained unsolved for decades. It gained renewed momentum after Davis made public statements and published a memoir in 2019, in which he described his role in the events and said he supplied the gun to men in the vehicle. A judge has allowed the book to be used as evidence at trial.
