Former Albanian President Ilir Meta has been arrested by the Special Prosecution Office for Corruption and Organized Crime (SPAK). The news was reported by Koha media outlet.
During the arrest, Ilir Meta’s organizational secretary, Artemisa Peka, was also in the car. At a press conference, Peka stated that they were surrounded by three cars with armed, masked men, who turned out to be police officers.
In his testimony in June, Mr. Meta insisted that he had never been involved in financial matters and claimed that the head of the criminal activities was his wife, Monika Kryemadhi. The former president had previously taken part in mass protests against the ruling Socialist Party, led by Prime Minister Edi Rama.
Meta, 55, who served as President of Albania from 2017 to 2022 and is now the leader of the opposition Freedom Party, is accused of corruption, money laundering, and asset concealment. The initial charges date back to his time as Minister of Economy from 2010 to 2011.
