Golden Dome Developers Complete First Tests of Space-Based Interceptors
World
Companies developing space-based interceptors for the United States’ Golden Dome missile defense system have completed the program’s first key tests, Bloomberg reported.
The participants include SpaceX and Northrop Grumman. According to the agency, the tests represent an early stage in validating technologies under the $185 billion program. For some companies, the initial tests involved transmitting sensor data to an interceptor and demonstrating the operation of spacecraft propulsion systems.
Golden Dome Director Gen. Michael Guetlein said the companies are now moving to the next phase: demonstrating that their technologies can operate in space. Guetlein officially serves as Director of Golden Dome for America and oversees the $185 billion program.
Golden Dome is designed as a layered missile defense architecture combining space- and ground-based capabilities to protect the United States from ballistic, hypersonic and advanced cruise missiles. In April, the U.S. Space Force awarded agreements worth up to $3.2 billion to 12 companies to develop space-based interceptors and related technologies. The participants include SpaceX, Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin and Anduril.
Earlier, in late June, U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth announced that the United States had conducted the first successful test of the Golden Dome system.
