Hamas and IRGC Confirm Haniyeh's Death in Israeli Strike
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran confirmed on Wednesday that Ismail Haniyeh, the leader of the radical Islamist organization Hamas, was killed in an Israeli strike in Tehran. Haniyeh was in Tehran to attend the inauguration ceremony of President Masoud Pezeshkian.
Hamas confirmed Haniyeh's death and called the attack a "serious escalation that will not achieve its goals." Haniyeh's bodyguard was also killed in the strike. Israel has yet to comment on the incident.
Haniyeh left the Gaza Strip in 2019 and lived in exile in Qatar. Yahya Sinwar, the main Hamas leader in Gaza, orchestrated the October 7 attack.
Tensions in the region escalated after a rocket attack on the Druze town of Majdal Shams in the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights killed 12 children and teenagers on Saturday evening.
